What Is the Darkest Legal Tint?

The darkest legal tint in Ontario is 70% VLT on front side windows and the windshield, with no limit on the rear. Here is how to get a dark, legal look on your car.

What Is the Darkest Legal Tint?

One of the most common questions we hear at Tint by Designs is: what is the darkest legal tint? Drivers want the sleek, private look of dark windows, but nobody wants a ticket or a failed inspection. In Ontario, the answer comes down to one key rule: the front side windows and windshield must allow at least 70% of visible light to pass through, while the rear windows have no darkness limit.

This guide explains exactly what the darkest legal tint is, how VLT works, and how to get a dark, aggressive look on your car while staying completely within Ontario law.

What Is VLT and Why Does It Determine "Legal"?

VLT stands for Visible Light Transmission. It is the percentage of visible light that passes through the window plus the film. A lower VLT means a darker tint:

  • 70% VLT: very light, the legal minimum for front side windows in Ontario
  • 50% VLT: light smoke
  • 35% VLT: medium, a popular "dark enough" look (rear only in Ontario)
  • 20% VLT: dark, strong privacy (rear only in Ontario)
  • 5% VLT: limo tint, nearly black (rear only in Ontario)

Ontario law is written in terms of light transmittance, not film brand or colour, so the "darkest legal tint" is simply the darkest film that still meets the 70% front-side requirement.

The Darkest Legal Tint in Ontario, Window by Window

Front Windshield

You cannot tint the main viewing area of the windshield. Only a narrow sun strip at the very top (down to the AS-1 line, usually about 16 cm) is allowed. The rest must be clear.

Front Side Windows

The front side windows must allow at least 70% of light through. This is the key limit. The darkest legal film you can add to the front sides is a very light ceramic film rated at or above 70% VLT. Because most factory glass already blocks a small amount of light, even a 50% film will usually push the combined transmittance below 70% and become illegal.

Rear Side Windows and Rear Windshield

There is no minimum light transmittance requirement for the rear windows. That means the darkest legal tint on the rear is effectively unlimited, you can run 20%, 5% limo tint, or anything in between, as long as the vehicle has side mirrors.

How to Get a Dark Look That Is Still Legal

The secret to a dark, legal tint is the two-shade approach:

  • Front side windows: a light, legal ceramic film at 70% VLT or higher
  • Rear side windows and rear windshield: a darker film of your choice, such as 20% or 5%

This setup gives you the privacy and dark appearance you want on the back of the car while keeping the front within the 70% legal limit. It is the most popular configuration we install at Tint by Designs, and it looks great on sedans, SUVs, and trucks alike.

Does a Light, Legal Front Tint Still Work?

Yes, and often better than people expect. A premium ceramic film at 70% VLT may look nearly clear, but it still:

  • Blocks up to 99% of UV rays
  • Reduces heat buildup inside the car
  • Cuts glare on bright Toronto days
  • Protects your interior from fading and cracking
  • Comes with a lifetime warranty

So you do not give up performance by choosing a legal front film. You get the protection without the legal risk. See our automotive window tinting page for more on the films we use.

What Happens If Your Tint Is Too Dark?

Running illegal dark film on the front side windows can lead to real consequences in Ontario:

  • A police officer can issue a ticket for non-compliant window tint
  • Your vehicle can fail a safety inspection or roadside check
  • You may be ordered to remove the film, which can damage defroster lines
  • It can complicate an insurance claim if visibility is questioned

The risk is simply not worth it when a legal two-shade setup looks just as good.

Darkest Legal Tint Myths, Debunked

  • "35% is legal on the front." Not in Ontario. Front sides must be 70% VLT or higher.
  • "If my car came with tinted glass, I can add more." Factory glass already reduces light. Adding dark film on top often drops the combined VLT below the legal limit.
  • "Darker tint blocks more heat." Not necessarily. Ceramic film blocks heat through technology, not darkness, so a light ceramic film can outperform a dark dyed one.
  • "Police never enforce it." They do, especially during roadside safety checks. It is not worth the gamble.
